GALLBLADDER AND GALLBLADDER DISEASES (cholecystitis and cholelithiasis)

Gallbladder is an important abdominal organ. It stores the bile juice produced by liver and this bile juice is secreted in the intestine at the time of when food comes in the intestine.

Sometimes this gallbladder gets inflamed. This causes pain in the abdomen, nausea and vomiting. Ultrasonography may show stones in the gallbladder. Surgery to remove the gall bladder may be advised to cure this condition.

Nowadays, with advent of radiology techniques, some diseases are being easily diagnosable. In ancient times, it was very difficult for the physicians to diagnose diseases like internal stones, tumors, etc. Still, in ancient India, with the help of Ayurveda, physicians used their analytical skills to diagnose and treat conditions like these. One of these diseases is gallbladder disease, especially cholelithiasis and cholecystitis.

In ancient texts like Madhav-Nidana, pathogenesis of gallstones is clearly mentioned. Bovine gallstones (Gorochan) are said to have medicinal properties. It was a known fact that gallstones are nothing but concretion of bile and other substances.

According to ayurvedic theories, all diseases are result of imbalance in three main vital energies, vata, pitta, and kapha. These represent air, heat, and earth respectively. These doshas get vitiated, they get mixed with other body parts and are deposited in the body.

According to ayurveda, gallbladder is called as pittashay where digestive juices are stored. With wrong dietary habits, this area is vitiated with the doshas. Wall of the gallbladder get inflamed and if this happens chronically, this can lead to thickening of gallbladder wall. Concretion of bile, etc., occurs due to both vata and kapha doshas. Kapha provides necessary binding material and vata dries up this material to create a stone.

Ayurveda suggests medicinal treatment for this condition. There are some panchakarmas also very helpful in treatment of this disease. I have some evidence to say that gallbladder stones can be dissolved with ayurvedic treatment without surgery.

If you haven't read it, I highly recommend doing so...

Sunil Joshi is probably the best around for pancha karma these days.

thanks for the suggestion! the ayurvedic practitioner that i've been seeing for the past four years prescribed an ayurvedic gall stone purge/cleanse that can easily be done at home every two weeks (if one feels so inpsired) that works wonders. actually, this is making me inspired to get going on that again. i had so much more energy when i was doing that. i've been struggling lately with my diet.

          And speaking of diet...

you've probably heard my *sob* story about three years ago breaking a heel bone, ripping out a shoulder, requiring three surgeries, and the then girlfriend who left in the middle of it all so I got to have the pleasure of not being a burden to anyone while going through it all...

well during that survival mode time I simply didn't have the energy or discipline to follow my normal ayurvedic diet, and if it wasn't for the fact that I forced myself to go to work and ate a couple of my meals there things probably could have been worse.

But great news! Recently I have been feeling much better (partially due to Medicine Buddha Practice) and have actually begun cooking for myself again, and the improvements in the way I feel continue to increase almost exponentially.

I look back at that trying time as compared to now and see yet further evidence that an ayurvedic diet is optimal.

The only part that makes me sad is that so many yogis and buddhists know nothing of ayurveda or Tibetan Medicine.
