Just wondering if there is a way to tell if you have a dosha imbalance without going to a practitioner - any tell tale signs? I am a pitta/vata/kapha , but over the last few months have been very kaphic on a physical level - I have an ongoing mucous / sinus issue that I thought was a sinus infection , but after an MRI the MD said no. It may be allergies, but it occured to me that it might be part of a kapha imbalance. It gets worse when I eat cheese - usually I don't have any problems with mucous at all - cheese or no.
thanks......

Re: Dosha Imbalance
Tue, March 6, 2007 - 6:12 PMKapha (mucous) gets easily disturbed in the spring, morning and dusk...
your tongue when you first wake up prior to brushing you teeth is perhaps your best guide - kapha imbalance will show up as a whitish tongue more towards the front.
Get a little more physical exercise, don't sleep during the day after eating a heavy meal, avoid taking cold showers every day, exposing your body through inadequate clothing, and working in damp and cold places. Also avoid eating lots of raw food such as uncooked meat, salad, raw fish, cold drinks, raw milk.
And if all of that is simply too much, simply add some ginger into your diet. -

Wed, March 7, 2007 - 2:43 PMthanks choc (is that how you say your name?)
maybe i'm not really as kapha as i think. i never sleep after a meal, i wake up around 7.30 or 8, (altho definitely later on weekends), work, and have been successful in excercising a bit more lately. I detest cold showers, dampness and wear warm clothes always. I was just wondering about the mucous. i thought i had a sinus infection but apparently I don't. the MD doesn't know what the pressure is, or why I sound congested like i have a cold. my nose isn't stuffed, its mainly sinus related AND gets way worse when I eat dairy. Maybe it's allergies? I don't know, but its been going on for over a year now. -

Re: Dosha Imbalance
Fri, March 9, 2007 - 3:01 AMIf it is worse with cheese, then it is sure kapha. Maybe your prakriti is not kapha but current condition (vikruti) is due to kapha. Why don't you try nasya (nasal drops with medicated oil) or jala-neti ? -

Fri, March 9, 2007 - 7:06 AMWhen I was learning pancha karma my teacher had a nasya formula with ginger in it - whew!
Cleans those nasal pasages and sunuses right out.

Re: Dosha Imbalance
Fri, March 9, 2007 - 7:31 AMchoc is fine marcia
The things I listed are the extremes and all of them as well.
Try having a little ginger every day for a week or so and see if it helps. I had an acquaintance who specialized in women's health via ayurveda and she used to have a small 1/8 inch slice of ginger after a meal that was heavily kapha, and especially after drinking milk or too much chai.
There is also a massage you can do that will help the sinuses drain.
For your upper sinuses, place the thumb edge of your index fingers of each hand on their respective eyebrow with the tips not quite touching. You should be able to feel a slight furrow in the bone if you try to move your index finger a little up or a little down. Pressing the edge of your finger into your eyebrow slowly make a circular massaging motion with your fingers - top, center, down, towards your ears, top, center, and so on - very small. After maybe even as short as 5 seconds you may have a drainage down the back of your throat from your sinuses.
For the lower sinuses, lay your index fingers across your nose in an upside down V, right at the bottom of the boney part of your nose and on the bone. With a sweeping motion apply light pressure as you arc your fingers down and across your cheek in a line similar to the bottom edge of the boney part of your nose all the way out to an up and down line even with the outer edge of your eyeball. Again about 5 seconds of doing this should break things up.
The massages work for dry or gunky stuffed up.
I hope these things help.

Re: Dosha Imbalance
Fri, March 9, 2007 - 11:02 AMyou may very well have AMA, it is not necessarily excess Kapha but is related to it. It’s is true, kapha liquefies in the spring so allergies often happen, to understand ones Vikruti (current Doshic imbalance) there are many factors involved, but the most prominent gets treated first, Vata is often the root culprit.

Re: Dosha Imbalance
Sat, March 10, 2007 - 11:04 PMthanks for all the feedback. ginger sounds like a good idea.
the mucous that is up in there is very thick, there usually isn't any drainage at all, unless I eat some dairy and then there is usually a little bit that can get sucked down (it makes a god awful sound but it is effective). I need to get a nedi pot, i have never used one or done a sinus wash,
i know, i know.........it would probably clear it right up. i need to get one -

Re: Dosha Imbalance
Mon, March 12, 2007 - 3:31 AMYou could also just try normal saline solution nose drops to break things up, wash out the excess mucous and hopefully restore things to normal (our poor noses work so hard keeping junk out of our lungs).
- Boil tap water for five minutes.
- Add 1/4 teaspoon of salt per 8 ounces of water (kosher or cooking salt might be best since regular table salt tends to have a bit of silica in it to make it free flowing and sometimes its also iodized, neither of which your nose cares about).
- Store in a clean covered container (Whole Foods sells various sized eye droppers).
- Allow the solution to cool to body temperature before using (and at body temperature is best overall).
- Lie on a bed with your head hanging over the edge, top of the head parallel to the floor, fill up your nose and let it *soak in* for a minute or two (this will get into the upper sinuses and you may have to add more as it gets up in there).
- Now lie flat for a minute or two and allow the saline to get into the lower sinuses.
- Sit up and get rid of the stuff that comes down.
You can do this twice in a row, and even do it twice a day twice in a row (or four times total spaced over the course of the day), but too much could dry the sinuses out excessively.
I hope some of what has been recommended in this thread works for you.

Re: Dosha Imbalance
Wed, April 4, 2007 - 1:37 PMI could be completely wrong but still a try... I am assuming the whole thing, so if I am wrong just leave it.
If you are eating very spicy food more recently, you might not be getting a proper ejaculation during sex which might result in increasing your sexual thoughts that leads to increased bile in blood leading to pita imbalance and fatigue leading to kapha imbalance as well.
If not, see if you changed your sexual practices recently which might be storing more kapha within your body to cause this confusion. This has a bad/larger effect when you are spending time with people whom you don’t like.

Re: Dosha Imbalance
Thu, April 5, 2007 - 9:20 PMI eat spicey food when my kapha is aggrivated. It usually helps. You should get an ayurvedic cook book if you don't have one. As suggested, Nasya is probably a good move. Massage once a week with mustard oil may help, or even a dry powder massage.
