I am experimenting with Raw Foods which have many benefits, but can also be tricky. I am intrested in what Ayurveda says about eating mostly raw diet.
So far i have concluded it is best for Pitta dominant types.
Any knowledge would be appreciated

Re: Raw and Ayurveda
Wed, February 4, 2009 - 9:15 PMAnahataDas,
what you say is correct, more raw foods is correct more for Piita predominant. also remember, time of year, seasonal eating, this is important factor in eating for your constitution. only do raw food as pitta predom. if pitta is not currently aggravated.
If ama is high (tongue diag or pulse diag) raw food is not essential. if you are going to do raw food, make sure to add raw dairy, as it is a complete food in ayurveda.
also raw food diet for long periods will eventually aggravate vata, causing lightness in the body. too much raw will burn up the "fire" in the body, will lower body temperature, can cause insomnia, slow metabolism, and cause food cravings.
ginger, cayenne, black pepper, cumin, coriander, fennel, etc. will improve digestion and metabolism in raw food diet.

Re: Raw and Ayurveda
Thu, February 5, 2009 - 3:54 PMThank you Ceanna
Eating raw in the winter has been tricky. I have felt so good and removed some energy blocks for sure, but also have been cold- not always bad and feel light and free, Loving. thank yoiu for your insights. my metabolism is slower, there is less fire. i feel slower, stiller in alot of ways. i just want to live in tropical climate and eat raw and be Still..
it is hard working fast paced things(and i begin to wonder, why i am being part of the racing society which is killing themselves and the eart for excess)?

Re: Raw and Ayurveda
Fri, February 6, 2009 - 9:29 AMin Ayurveda Prana from food is essential, raw food has a high amount of prana thus it increases vata dosha, who already has excess prana do to the predominance of the ethereal factor, the coldness of raw food also aggravates vata. The prana from raw foods increases wind as well and causes excess udana vata to travel upwards causing wind in the head (air head) I almost went out of my mind from eating only raw foods for an extended period, I am a vata person and at that time in my life my vata was also excessive. I couldn't sleep at night and I did not have regular bowel movements, I also had fits of depression, dry skin and emaciation, and no it wasn't a "healing crisis" it was a deranged vata crisis.
Going back to Prana, which is essential to get from food, as well as air and sunlight. In Ayurveda, they see freshly cooked food as high in prana as well, where as after the food has been processed and leftover, the prana is destroyed and the properties change from satvik to rajasik and tamasik (dulling, static) that is why restaurant food is often Tamasik, because the food is prepped the day before and leftovers are often served. Baked food can retain some prana for a few days. Raw food is also high in prana, but is too cold, hard and rough and can easily increase vata and kapha, Pitta-kapha types and pittas can benefit most from raw food, but in the middle of the day when the agni (digestive fire is strongest), even vata types can eat some in the summer, but freshly cooked food is always best for us (Vatas)
Some raw food is always utilized in Ayurveda, like fruit (different types for each dosha, and climate) and not too much as it can cause fermentation, and not with bad food combining, chutneys can also be raw (coconut, cilantro etc..) and certain herbs and nuts can be raw, certain veggies can be steamed or lightly cooked to retain Prana.
I have experimented extensively on my self with Raw food diets, macrobiotic diets, alkaline diets, and Ayurvedic diets, I had to go through these processes to see what works for me. For very toxic people, I think raw food detox can be great for a period of time (hopefully in a warm climate or season) but I know many people who do raw foods for many years and not all of them are the model of perfect health, some of them emit a foul smell (which they don't even notice ) according to TCM this is from a very damp, cold spleen which creates a smell like a rotten marsh. And some of them are a bit crazy as well. So I think that one should not be fanatical about it, but be sensitive and always try new things. enjoy your high meditations with all of that Prana, but know that those of us who eat freshly cooked food also enjoy quite a bit of spiritual bliss, which is not dependent on a raw food diet ("we cannot eat our way to heaven").

Re: Raw and Ayurveda
Fri, February 6, 2009 - 2:08 PMthank you ananta that was great. i am eating some cooked food and finding a balance for Pitta with spices. i felt too much pitta today (so far only raw) with halavah, lots of fruit and pepper, ginger, cinnamon, lemon, and green juice of cucumber, celery, carrot
my digestion has been irregular but i sleep fine.
I feel like the best scenario to do raw food is warm vacation

Re: Raw and Ayurveda
Wed, May 13, 2009 - 2:54 PMinteresting topic...
i;ve been rereading much about raw foods again. this idea that cooked foods create mucoid layer in the intestines because it is toxic and organs need protection does resonate in me and makes sense. altough i dont; see raw foods being any less addictive then cooked foods, as some raw foodists think cooked food a chemical addiction which there is some truth in...although i have also seen many raw date addicts! For years i;ve wanted to persue raw lifestyle more (i have moved around much and left many a juicer / blender / dehydrator behind...) but know that intuitive eating is best for me. It is spring and i want to be raw right now but in the winter NO, not for me. now to reinvest again in a raw kitchen... is Expensive!!
Always Listen to your body! To say the raw diet is the best for all is the height of spiritual arrogance! It is like saying one religion is the best...

Re: Raw and Ayurveda
Thu, May 14, 2009 - 3:28 PMYes, Pitta Pitta-Kappha as the threads say, can benefit from raw foods. Funny though, when I was living in India and doing Ayurveda treatments and studies, we almost never ate raw food. This can also depend on age- as we age- Vata becomes more predominant, so warming foods would be counseled. Americans tend to eat too much at all times of day.In Ayurveda, I was taught that I could cheat, depending on what time of day I ate my spicy foods. I am Pitta moving to Vata with Prakruti Kappha tendency- so I will eat spicy outside of Pitta hours ( 10-2PM, Indian time, not necessarily yours!) when the sun is high and can aggravate Pitta...or if Kappha... eat your ice icream, not for breakfast! But, more reasonably later. I find Ayurvedic nutrition hard to apply at times, and always love the story of giving liver as medicine to vegetarians.Om shanti peace -

Re: Raw and Ayurveda
Mon, June 15, 2009 - 9:21 PMIs refreshing to read your posts and be back around the Ayurvedic world again - through the ethers.
Another thing we used to tell people (raw foodist) is that they could heat up their olive oil (if one was ok heating it a bit) and pour it warm over their food which wilts the greens but keep them raw. Or can also use a vita mix and bring food up to body temp so the enzymes are still active. I found that I needed to add in a cooked rice or dhal and more spices and oil when I'd been on a raw diet for a period of time.

Re: Raw and Ayurveda
Sat, July 18, 2009 - 5:20 PMraw food is awsome. its been a while since i made this thread, but i feel so great. you just need to find a balance of foods... i have started eating some cooked foods again to be social, but raw is #1. its one of those things you wonder why humans do it like that???? i really reccomend raw to all people, including vatas, since i am probably mostly vata.
Parmahansa Yogananda reccomends eating mostly raw foods.
some things that have helped: soaking and eating grains(buckwheat, quinoa) sprouting lentils, etc... making tahini yummy, green juices are awsome. its like existing on another level. a useful discipline like yoga, meditation, etc...
blessings to you all!
