Ayurveda and IBS?

Hello there!
I am a vata kapha and have really variable digestion. Sometimes I am going to the bathroom all the time (when I am anxious) and other times I can barely go for a few days. I also get really bloated and gassy after dinner time and also experience pain.
I have been told that stress reduction and exercise are the most important things for me. I also know balance is very important in my life, however I am so unattracted to a regular routine! Any other suggestions other than these? I think being both vata and kapha has made it so that my digestion issues are very extreme on both sides.
i am also wondering about the ayurvedic perspective on IBS.
Thanks :)

I can't speak with any expertise, but you may want to do some research on and try Triphala. Seemingly subtle, I found it to be very effective.

I think you could also find and do the good things for you that help you maintain your equilibrium as well as a balanced and grounded perspective and valuable "set of behaviors that you will find satisfying and meaningful without it becoming a routine by rote.

    I hate routine too.

IBS is rather vague term for the group of digestion disorders in which no other organic cause is found and when there is some emotional stress that plays as a trigger. Prominent symptoms are periods of loose stools alternating with constipation and sometimes abdominal pain and bloating.

In chapter 15 of Charak Samhita this issue is discussed in great details. IBS symptoms are much similar to what is called as Grahani in ayurveda. The disease has the same name as the part of intestine which is affected (hence this is also similar to the phrase 'irritable bowel'). Grahani is that part of intestine in which second stage of digestion takes place (see my previous post on digestion). Vata plays major role in this. Importance has been given to pacify and balance Vata to treat this disease. Details of samprapti must be confirmed before deciding a specific treatment plan. Grahani is generally classified in two ways. First is according to dosha predominance (vataja, pittaja, and kaphaja.). Another classification is sama and nirama (with ama or without ama).

For Vataja and Sama grahani, (which is the most frequent occurrence), general treatment plan is as follows, first is snehan (oleation), swedan (fomentation) and panchakarma of either basti or anuloman (very mild virechan). Snehan is to be done internally as well as externally (preferred is ghee with saindhav salt for internal and til oil externally). Swedan could be done with steam bath.

After snehan swedan and basti, one must try to eliminate ama with the use of pachak medicines. Care must be taken to avoid using too hot medications which may lead to increase in pitta. Next comes improving the agni with sansarjan krama (see my previous post on digestion).

Medications that are proved very effective are trikatu, panchakola ghrita, kapardik bhasma, etc. Some may need treatment with panchamur parpati taken at the time of samana vata, i.e., during the meal.

IBS takes time to cure completely and must be treated according to individual causes and prakriti. Individual treatment of course varies according to awastha of the disease and prakriti.

    Hahaha..BS..
*sighs* I wish I knew where to get these medicines locally. My grandmother is suffering terribly from this condition right now. It's an odd coincidence that i signed into Tribe not expecting information about this at all when I was thinking about her condition, and here it is..

    Hi,

few practical tips that have helped me with my crap digestion:

    1. digestion is always weakest at night, most yogis reccomend elimanating dinner or having a very light meal, i.e. some fruits vegetables e.t.c.. this will make your wake up easier in the morning and eliminate all pains as yourself am i really hungry now or am i just craving yummy dinner food.

    2. Make sure you chew your food properly... i mean make it liquid before you swallow it. Most people just shove there food down there mouths while talking about one thing or another... concentrate on what your doing

    3. Drink some water before you eat and 5-10 minutes after the meal will help digestion, don't drink during as it hurts the digestive juices

    4. Add some good spices to your food... black pepper, ginger, cummin, turmeric

    5. 1/2 stomach food, 1/4 water and the rest for gas... is a very good rule

    Hope it helps :)
