Coronary Artery Plaque (calcium deposits)

Does Ayurveda have anything that would gently reduce Coronary Artery Plaque (calcium deposits)?

Modern Medicine says, " The narrowing and blockage of the arteries by plaque, which consists of cholesterol, calcium, clotting proteins, and other substances, is called atherosclerosis. When this process occurs in the arteries leading to the heart, the result is coronary heart disease. If the blood supply to the heart muscle is severely reduced or stopped, and the heart doesn’t receive the oxygen it needs, a ‘heart attack’ occurs. The muscle cells suffer irreversible damage and die. The pain of a heart attack is actually the pain of dying heart muscle tissue. The process of atherosclerosis is now known to begin as early as in childhood. However, even late in adulthood, lifestyle changes can reduce the onset or severity of coronary artery disease."

The answer is 'Yes.' And this time, I have some evidence. I have seen (and treated) many patients with CAD who are doing quite well only on conservative (ayurvedic) treatment. Of course, according to modern research we will need pre and post treatment angiographies to prove this, which is very difficult considering the cost of these investigations and purpose of these studies. The pathology of CAD includes atherosclerosis (deposition of lipids in the intima of arteries). This suggests vitiation of kapha dosha. There is hardening of arteries - possibly due to vata dosha. In some instances coronary vasospasm may lead to ischemia and myocardial infarction, which may be interpreted as vata vitiation with avarana. There are some patients where angina (chest pain due to CAD) is manifested as burning sensation - this can be due to pitta.

But I feel that final ayurvedic diagnosis should depend on symptom interpretation and study of hetus (causes eg, diet, activities etc.) rather than modern pathological studies. Ayurvedic treatment will be successful only with the study of ayurvedic pathology (samprapti) and ayurvedic etiology (hetus)

Thanks cm, that is interesting, similar to my thoughts.

I had a CT scan to evaluate a rib injury (so it was a basic chest wall scan without contrast). They noted some coronary artery plague deposits in their report and suggested another scan in 6 months.

I had just started getting high blood pressure which I had attributed to chronic agravating rib pain, but the new info is a bit worrisome. Right now I have no confirmation the plaque deposts are related to high blood pressure and increased heart beat. A friend said that they can give you a cardiac stress test to see literally whether the blood flow is restricted. I suppose the test would be useful, but I'm not too keen on the modern meds they provide and the possible surgical approaches (stints and/or bypass).

Well, for sure, yogic breathing exercises will keep oxygen to the heart muscles, but an herbal tonic to clean up the deposits would be better. Arjuna is supposed to be a good herb for this. Dosha imbalance is also important.

I suggest that you undergo a complete evaluation of hetus(causes), complete ayurvedic history and physical, and samprapti (ayurvedic pathological diagnosis) by a vaidya and go through some systematic program for all your problems. Your condition warrants complete cleansing and observance of strict dietary protocol along with medical treatment that would help dissolve the plaque and normalize the dosha imbalance.

Hi everyone. My grandmother (in her late 60s) has been having extremely high blood pressure up to 250/140 and so, she has very blocked off arteries and now takes a LOT of blood pressure medicine and medications like Plavix in an attempt to keep her arteries cleaned out.
The allopathic physicians said that this condition has probably been going on for quite some time now. Her mother also had a similiar condition, although her mother was quite thin.
Her blood pressure will shoot up extremely high with the least bit of provocation (a tiny amount of salt, or even just slight stress),up into stroke level. We're trying to help her with dietary precautions and such, but it always stays about the same.
Does anyone have any knowledge/advice on a condition this severe?

Harding of arteries may occur irrespective of whether you are thin or obese, but it does make a difference when we diagnose and treat it with ayurveda. From ayurvedic standpoint, my initial impression is, this is most probably due to Vata. Some people do have difficult-to-control blood pressure. But effect of this longstanding elevated blood pressure on vital organs (like kidney, eyes, arteries, etc.) varies according to individual constitution. However, there are some individuals with similar high blood pressure leading normal life without any effect on their vital organs. Risk of stroke is there, especially if the arteries have become fragile (leading to a bleed) and/or due to blood-clot embolism. Did she have any prior embolic events or DVT that prompted the doctors to put her on Plavix or just hypertension? There are other possibilities also and your grandmother needs complete evaluation by an ayurvedic physician. High blood pressure patients also usually have pitta (acidity) symptoms. Many hypertension patients are diagnosed as pittavruta vata (vata obstructed by pitta). You may email if you want to discuss her history or you have any specific questions.

Thank you for your response. She had one artery on her right side so blocked that her blood pressure readings were quite low.She had a bypass a few months ago but it really did little to change her overall blood pressure readings.
Another thing I can tell you about her general health is that she has had major problems with her lower intestines. She has something she calls a "spasmodic colon" , that leads to a lot of pain and discomfort at times. She had this for nearly twenty years and it mysteriously vanished and was seemingly replaced by these episodes of extreme hypertension.(I may be wrong here but this is what it semed like to me).
Another thing I have noticed is that when her blood pressure goes up quite high, her face gets red, she has attacks of anger and paranoia and lashes out at anyone around her. She will also try to get into a frenzy of activity. When it goes up even higher she gets even redder and starts shaking all over.
The blood pressure raise is quite predictable because I can ALWAYS tell by her behavior.
There are no ayurvedic physicians in my area, but I can try to do as much as I can to help her with this at home. Would it be appropriate to get her a diet that minimizes pitta dosha even more?Or anything else that can be implemented in a home setting?

When there are two doshas and one of them is pitta, it is safer to treat the pitta first to avoid acute symptoms.

The anger symptoms are consistent with pitta dosha. The immediate thing to do would be, as you have mentioned, cool the pitta down with anti pitta diet. Secondly, you may use gentle body massage with sesame oil to help balance the vata. Internal treatment with amla, anantamula, and sarpagandha may help.

Your observation regarding colon problem is indeed remarkable. Large intestine is also asthidhara kala, i.e, place/origin of asthi dhatu (bony tissue). It is possible that there is something wrong with metabolism of asthi-dhatu (because her arteries are deposited with calcium which is similar to asthi). Long-term treatment with guduchi kshir basti (milk processed with guduchi) would be useful to correct this.

But I must tell you that these measures would help only if religiously performed on a long-term basis. This is a disease process which has been going on since many years. The cycle of metabolism and subtle digestion are disturbed, and it will take an effort to reverse the changers. However, this treatment should halt or at least slow down further deterioration. Hunt for diet and behavioral causes, so as to avoid those and to treat appropriately.
