Ginger

topic posted Tue, October 9, 2007 - 5:55 PM by  Bala
Hello everyone...

So i was wondering, if someone has heat in their body or a lot of pitta, is it advised to stay away from ginger, is ginger too warming or heating or does it actually somehow support pitta in some way?

Thanks

bala

Ginger is hot. It will increase heat and pitta if taken in excess. However, prudent use of ginger may help increase agni (digestive fire). For this purpose, it is generally advised to eat ginger (half-inch piece) and a pinch of saindhav (rock salt ) just before the meals or halfway through the meals.

The Pitta time of day is 10AM-2PM- so eat the ginger outside this time frame to keep the heat down. Om shanti-

My understanding is to use the fresh ginger as it aggravates pitta less, powdered ginger is hotter and better for kapha types.

This is kinda interesting I have been craving Ginger lately.

My question is how does it a affect a Triple Dosha???
I did a quiz and it had me as a tri-Dosha

where's your intuition in all of this?
    I say, follow that.

Good advice, except that according to ayurveda there is healthy cravings and unhealthy cravings, healthy cravings is when you are attracted to things with opposite qualities then your increased dosha, like pitta being attracted to sweet or bitter, or vata being attracted to unctuous things ect. The problem is, is that we are mostly attracted to what increases our dosha (thats one reason why its increased in the first place) there is the saying "like attracts like" so the Pitta always wants spicy, oily and fermented things, Vata always wants sprouts, spirulina and fasting, kapha always wants cookies, candy chocolate and sweets, and this way, over time, dosha turns into disease, this is unhealthy craving and is very common. As far as spiritual intuition goes, with all do respect I doubt our higher self/God cares whether we eat ginger or not, unless our pitta is so increases that it causes health problems ( I have seen that before)

        HahahaHAhAhAaaa!!!!

        Excellent!

There certainly is a difference between pleasureable and beneficial.

Find out your dosha, eat purely sattvic for it for a couple of months to know what that feells like and then let your body be your guide - the body is infinitely wiser about food choices than the mind if only we give it the chance.

        Ok keep this in mind.
What I find to be true is that the body craves certain things.
I do crave ginger but I have been dealing with weather that is changing from cold and wet, to dry cold and on occassion we get a warm front here right now.
This is part of what is playing havoc with the body.
I think we crave certain foods when the body is deficient in certain vitamins, minerals, etc.
        Does this make sense??

I crave sweets, chocolate, and salty foods when I am close to my monthly cycles.
This can be unhealthy if over indulged so I try not to do it.

But I also crave alot of veggies and fruits right now as well.
So to me I feel it is my bodies way of getting in balance.

actually what you and crazygir have said are also true, the cells of the body have a craving for what they need, this is an unconscious craving, so your idea of everything in moderation is good

me too, thanks everyone!!! Sure enough ia mnot craving ginger anymore.. the craving just naturally went.. Now i am craving fresh fennel and Kaboucha teas... go figure!!

it is really true about letting your intuition be your guide, it is subtle, though very worth tuning into...

as an opportunist, I'll also take this chance to point out something I've been realizing/learning/seeing with myself lately:
              - different kinds of hunger.

right now, I find myself having a belly hunger (it's empty and wants to be fed), a mental hunger (I just want to eat), and a body hunger (cells need sustenance.. or something specific is missing)
