The holy day of Gudhi padva is being celebrated on Monday, March 19, 2007 Gudhi padva is first day of the year, according to Hindu calendar. This day is celebrated to signify arrival of Lord Rama back to home after defeating his enemy Ravana. To celebrate this event, a gudhi (a kind of flag) is hoisted on every household in India. Also, it is a custom to eat fresh neem leaves with some jaggery early in the morning.
Winter is over and first signs of hot Indian summer are showing. Trees are blossoming with tender light-green leaves. Vasanta ritu has started. All the kapha which is accumulated during winter has started to liquefy. Vaman treatments are being performed to cleanse this kapha out. Neem helps to cleanse the blood of this and vitiated kapha. The beauty of neem is that it decreases kapha without increasing pitta. At the start of year with the use of neem we hope that the rest of year goes healthy and peaceful. Wish you all happy gudi padva.

Re: Gudhi Padva, neem, and ayurveda
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 8:29 AMHi cm,
Spring is here on the east coast of the US as well, and I'm definitely feeling the kapha liquefying! Could you share with us how you use neem to cleanse it, and what form the neem is in? Wishing you a happy gudi padva.

Re: Gudhi Padva, neem, and ayurveda
Fri, March 23, 2007 - 10:37 PMHi Santoka,
Neem is not anti-kapha per se, but it is best during this season because it helps decrease kapha and pitta at the same time. Other anti-kapha herbs may increase pitta and hence may not be suitable during this season. Neem is a good blood purifier. Neem is also good antifungal. I have even tried it for viral warts and the results were magnificent. The warts on face vanished within a fortnight which was unbelievable.
On gudi padva, as a custum we eat 5-10 raw neem leaves (with some jaggary to reduce the bitter taste).
For skin conditions like tinea, best way to consume neem is in juice form. A 2-3 teaspoonfuls of juice every-day in the morning for one month.
A word of caution though, for vata people, neem is not for a long-term use as it may increase vata, but you may use for short-term period.
