Some time ago, I was in dance class and went into a stretch for my arms that was beyond my capability and I hurt my shoulder. It seemed that I pinched a nerve and for some time my arm felt like it was asleep much of the time. It had gone away, and I had forgotten about it, but it has started again. I work hard and I am on the physical side alot, but I cannot pinpoint a time that would have injured me again. It starts from the center of my arm socket in the front and travels down the top/middle of my bicep, into the inside bend of my elbow and straight down my lower arm into my thumb and pointer finger. I don't know what to do. I was going to try heat and hot showers. I had put some ginger paste on my back for a bad back ache, and it did wonders. I was wondering if ginger paste would do anything in this case. My arm is constantly tingling as if it were asleep. I am sure I have some sort of nerve problems. Now, my fingers (only my pointer and thumb) have developed an itching sensation. I thought it might be stress bringing on some eczema or something, but I feel more that my nerve problems in my arm are causing this sensation. Any anti-itch suggestions similar to hydro-cortison?

Re: Pinched nerve in shoulder joint.
Tue, March 27, 2007 - 6:36 PMWell, You may try neem oil or powder (make a past) for the itching, but it sounds like you may need some good massage. You could try Dhanwantaram oil for nerve pain.

Re: Pinched nerve in shoulder joint.
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 4:04 AMSounds definitely more than eczema. Your finger symptoms appear to be in the distribution of a nerve called median nerve and most probably this nerve is hurt at some place along its course from brachial plexus. This also could be associated with sprained muscle or ligament especially at shoulder.
Anyway, ayurvedically it is Vata all right. Give some time for the presumed injury to heal. The first trauma could have made this nerve vulnerable to Vata attack. In any case treatment should consist of application of lots and lots of oil (like narayan oil or dhanvantara oil) for vata pacification followed by heat. Also try ashvagandha powder 500 mg plus licorice 500 mg two- three times a day. You may take a tablet called Yograj guggulu 500 mg twice a day (watch for acidity, because guggulu may increase acidity). Vata pacifying diet and behavior would help. -

Re: Pinched nerve in shoulder joint.
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 7:05 PMYes,
If you want to do this the ayurvedic way, oil yourself from head to toe everyday. Ayurvedic oils are the best, but if you are trying to save money, use seasamie oil. Internal oiling will also help, like a tablespoon of ghee in a glass of milk every mourning. If you begin to have problems with congestion, then lower the dose.

Re: Pinched nerve in shoulder joint.
Fri, March 30, 2007 - 7:26 PMIt ~could~ also be a rotator cuff problem, which enters into the world of exercise therapy and *GACK!* possibly surgery...
I ripped one of mine out several years ago, and then again later a couple of years ago and it was not any fun.
