Re: question about hair oils
Sat, August 2, 2008 - 10:53 AMThis one site I have ordered from has two good hair oils: www.indiaabundance.com. Look for the Baidyanath Mahabhringraj oil or the Neelibhringadi oil; both are reputed formulations (although I'm not sure they contain triphala). In India there is one brand which I have used, which is excellent: www.mahabhringarajoil.com/. It contains triphala.
Presently I got myself a bottle of a really excellent oil made with hibiscus flowers, bhringaraj, triphala, sandalwood etc etc from my ayurvedic teacher, a renowned vaidya in Pune. Handmade in his own dispensary. Only $1 for 100 ml =)
The other medicines you mention sound like Unani, not Ayurvedic preparations. You won't find them in the US.

Re: question about hair oils
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 6:36 AMWhen I was really diligent about using oil, it reduced shedding, but to be honest, no ayurvedic remedy is going to grow you new hair if you have a severe problem. They are more palliative. I now use oil just to keep my head cool since I have pretty high pitta.
Good luck. -

Re: question about hair oils
Thu, August 7, 2008 - 2:40 PMthats cool. this woman in a yahoo hair group i'm in told me the oil produced rapid hair growth and she took uses it. the prob that i had when i was a teen is that i was given a medicine for my acne but i was never told it would cause hair loss. i put my hair in braids, that brought it a kick to force the hair to grow. when i started goin to a salon, i realized my hair wasnt healthy at all. ive been buying the right products for my hair and i use natural shampoo/conditioner. the herbs in there are really making my hair grow and healthy! but still, parts of my hair are thin because of the medicine. -

Re: question about hair oils
Sun, January 4, 2009 - 9:40 PMyes this do work ...but the real Qestion is .....have u taken care of the basic problems ...like excessive pita...that is the main cause for the greying of hairs & hair fall ...when it gets vitiated It harms root of hairs & they start falling ...no medicine how so ever good will be able to take care of ur hair ...if u r not taking care of the basic cause .
Second thing is if the medicine is not properly made then ..then also u will not be able to get desirable results.....
To take care of the basic pro u will have to use some thing internally & to get Quick results u also use external oils & herbal shampoos.
Hope that clears the issue

Re: question about hair oils
Sun, January 4, 2009 - 10:50 PMwell ayuredic means 100 % ayurvedic ...that is made with herbal powders only (which is soaked in water overnight & then used to wash hairs in the morning ...other wise what ever is sold in the market with tag of ayurveda is nothing but some chemical based shampoo which may have some extract of herbs

Re: question about hair oils
Fri, April 17, 2009 - 9:21 PMThere is a common trend with modern medicine, which is to push the symptoms of disease deeper into the body, so that they appear to have vanished. From the Doshic perspective this means that the body's natural processes of eliminating excess dosha from the body are being redirected. Like childhood eczema coming back later as asthma, or chicken pox coming back later as shingles. The skin has a very close association with the blood, and blood with Pitta. It is possible for dosha to find another path of least resistance, and it will if it's not eliminated.
I have an oil I make for a child with vitiligo, and seeing that one of the main ingredients was bakuchi, her mother decided to take it upon herself to self medicate for her thinning hair and use it on her own hair. She's been doing it for a while, but I don't think it has had any results. Bakuchi is, however, classically recommended for regrowing and maintaining hair.
There is another thing I'm working on that old teacher got me onto, which is an alcohol based hair tonic. It's a simple mixture, and so far I've only made one batch, but he is trying it out to see how it goes. Years ago he apprenticed with a guy who was doing experiments with a variation of this formula, and having really good results. I haven't priced it out yet, but I can keep you updated if you like.

Hello,
I have heard from my herbal teacher that Banyan Botanicals and Bazaar of India both sell organic Ayurvedic products.
I understand that Eclipta alba is beneficial for correcting hair loss.
I also agree with the others on the importance of getting to the root of the problem first.
You can possibly try Dr. Vasant Lad's website: Ayurvedic.com. his institute is in New Mexico or check with Dr. Alan Tillotson in Wilmington, Delaware.
A side note: I have had luck using my teacher's herbal product for strengthening hair, nails, skin, and bones. If you'd like check herbalist- alchemist.com. The product name is Osteoherb. These are western herbs only.
Good luck!
Theresa
