Many food combinations are described as ‘viruddha’ as per Charak Samhita. Viruddha combinations tend to increase and vitiate the doshas in such a way that those doshas are difficult to be brought out of the body ((ashtanga hriday sutrasthana 7/45).

Ghee and honey in equal quantities cause such a vitation. Similarly, honey and rainwater in equal quantities are said to be viruddha (Charak Samhita - sutrasthana 26/84). This is due to a phenomenon called Prabhava. Prabhava means a phenomenon where reason is really unexplainable.

Practically when using honey and ghee for Anupana (with some other herbs), we advise to use unequal parts of honey and ghee, e.g.- for kapha, use more honey than ghee, and for vata and pitta, use more ghee than honey.

Hi Jody, we actually had to read the Charaka Samhita which I believe is a group of three books (It's been close to 10 years since I graduated CCA so am not absolutely sure which one it was in). I've since donated mine back to the school.

**"Too much of a good thing?"** lol, you mean like chocolate covered pretzels ;)

I found this online from one of Dr. Lad's (Ayurvedic Institude) HTML's on Food combining. (http://www.boulderayurveda.com/BA-weblibrary/Food%20Combining.p1.pdf.:) lol, love prabhav, keeps mystery alive :)

"Different quantities of each food involved in a combination can sometimes help significantly For instance equal quantities by weight of ghee and honey are a bad combination—ghee is cooling, but honey is heating—whereas mixing a 2:1 ratio is not toxic. The reason? Prahbav, the unexplainable."

I have never seen this in translation. What books are you using? The honey and the ghee, I believe, is kapha, too much of a good thing? good for airheads though! LOL! Om!

I believe in the Charaka Samhita books is says equal parts will cause death - well that is the translation anyway (if I remember right) but then the wording all through the books were pretty black and white. Of course we all asked why, after reading that. One of he East Indian Instructors just said, "Don't have honey on your toast if you put ghee on it!" She was exasperated with our concern with exactly how much would cause death and why (students that we were then, lol).

I figured that it's probably not a compatible connection thus ama forming, as Ananta mentioned. It would be interesting to get more information on this subject though.

according to the scriptures, equal quantities of honey and ghee is a bad combination, Ama forming, but this is equal by weight not volume, I don't know why it is a bad combination, many Rasayanas have both honey and ghee in them, one even calls for frying the Vajikarana preparation and thus cooking the honey which is another Ama forming thing. SO with ghee and honey I just tend to say my Guru mantra and not worry about it.

I've read in a number of sources that if you use honey and ghee together, you should never use them in equal parts. Why is this?
