Ayurvedic Cleanse & Protocol....

Namaste All,

I am a student of Ayurveda & have currently been diagnosed thru pluse with kidney stones & an inflamed liver & possible Gall Stones...
I have devised a cleanse thru research and need a little guidance and advise about the protocol....

I want to make sure that during this cleanse that the Dipana (Agni) is high, the Pachana (ability to digest Ama) is strong, and Anulomana (the ability to eliminate toxins) is working properly.....
I know that I must have a healthy colon in order to have a successful cleanse & my tongue is showing signs of mild ama & scallops (mal-absorption)...
I have developed some kidney stones which are in need of attention (I am feeling a dull pain in my left kidney)
and my liver/GB has been tender & inflamed over the past month... the main intention of the cleanse is to eliminate the kidney & gall stones....
I am thinking of ending the cleanse with a few basti's, both anuvasana & niruha, if needed....

I have the following herbs to work with:
- Triphala (to cleanse colon)
- Redmond Clay (to help draw out toxins)
- Psyillium Husk/Isabgol (to help draw out toxins)
- Hingwastika (to help kindle agni)
- Bhumi Amalaki (for kidney stones)
- Gokshura (kidney)
- Purnarnava (kidney)
- Purnarnava Guggulu (kidney)
- Corriander (kidney)
- Shillajit (kidney)
- Milk thistle (liver)
- Dandelion root (liver)
- Tikta Ghee (liver)

My vikruti is Vata with Kapha also vitiated (but not as much as vata)
My prakruti is Pitta & my pitta tends to go off balance quite easily (I get short & irritable)...
So I think all 3 doshas are out of balance as of now, in the following order: VPK

I have come up with the following protocol to address the liver - but this was before I realized that I also had kidney stones....
I started with a general fast to help clear out the intestines, but want to make sure that it doesn't make my agni weak...
Now that I need to address the kidneys as well, I am getting confused....
Perhaps this protocol is totally wrong... I've done my best with research, etc...
I am ready to cleanse, but want to take my time and be gentle with my body as well...
I am also confused as to which herbs to take - they are all good, but too much of a good thing doesn't always help....
Would you mind having a look and giving me some insight as to what your thoughts are???
Any guidance would be very much appreciated!!!!

Start:
Days 1- 3: Master Cleanse (fasting) with salt water & a small amount of clay in the afternoon
*** Will this reduce the strength of my agni? I feel that I will need full strength Agni in order to go to the next phase
*** Shall I take a few days here to re-kindle agni before I begin with the oleation???
Day 4: Eat watery rice gruel & kitchari (mildly spiced) & rest
Days 5 - 11: Oletation with Tikta Ghee - start with 2 tsp ghee and continue to add 2 tsp daily until 14 tsp...
**** Do I take the ghee in the morning only or can I divide dose in half and take other half in the afternoon???
**** Will my agni be strong enough after fasting or shall I spend a few days re-kindling the agni first before doing the oleation???
**** Can I included vegetables with my kitchari diet or should I just stick with plain kitchari???
**** Can I exercise during this phase???
Day 12: Poop day (virechena with 6 tbsp castor oil)
Day 13: Rest & eat Rice gruel
*** How many days of Purva Karma is necessary??? Shall I just eat rice gruel on Day 13 and then begin kitchari???
Days 14 - 34: Start with Kidney herbs and on day 24 start with liver/GB herbs.... Maintain Kitchari diet...
***** Which herbs to take & in what combination???
**** Can I have vegetables as well???
Six days before herbs are finished - start with Apple Juice fast (32oz apple juice daily + kitchari for 6 days)
On sixth night start the liver flush (epsome salt, olive oil, etc)
Finish with colonic.... (or do basti)...

Any advise as to if this is a good protocol, will not vitiate my agni, etc will be very much appreciated!!!
Thanks & blessings!!!

Milk to increase Shukra Dhatu

I have a question about which milk should I use to increase Shukra Dhatu.

It has been mentioned here that milk needs to be boiled before consumption... at the same time it is also mentioned that unpasteurized and unhomogenized milk is the best. My question is - if the milk needs to be boiled then i could just buy regular milk instead of unpasteurized milk right? also does raw milk have Vitamin D?

AyurJyothi Massage Stage 2009 India

AyurJyothi Massage Stage 2009 India

AyurJyothi massage is a special kind of massage or healing method based on ayurveda and yoga. This method is a powerful way to give an experience to the people who are tired and depressed. It is also highly therapeutic for people who are suffering from muscular pain, insomnia, helps to come out from emotional imbalances etc, if the healer is really serious and devoted to his profession can help his/her clients to feel the deep silence and peace inside themselves. It is a powerful method to come back to the self, which help to have a peaceful life.

This massage helps to balance the vita (air) pita (fire) kappa (water) elements in the human body. According to ayurveda balance of three elements is the result of good health.

It also helps to generate more pranas the life force in our body and mind, helps to promote strong immunity and spiritual awakenings. It needs an open mind with trust, more sessions and change of life style also necessary too. This method often helps people to change their life. That is why this massage is called AyurJyothi massage: ayur means life, Jyothi means light. It is the light of life. This method helps us to have a positive transformation in our life.

Help - Sexual Exhaustion

I am 32 years old. I got into the bad habit of ejaculating to online porn in 2000. I got addicted and ejaculated multiple times every day and gradually with the years started to lose my erection power. Now I don't get spontaneous erection or morning wood. I have some nocturnal erections that go away as soon as I become completely awake. During day time I get very very weak erections when I feel horny. My penis is not hard at all and it doesn't "rise" (if you know what i mean)

I would like to regain my sexual power before it becomes too late. I read a little bit about Ayurveda and learnt that Shilajit and Safed Musli can potentially help. Will this work? Is there anything else I need to do?

Many thanks,
hcp

I live in Florida and I'm graduating high school next year and it would help me out a lot if you can give me some feedback about ayurveda schools or some advice on where to go. I don't mind traveling to go study somewhere else like India, but I don't know if language would be an issue. I was thinking of studying for like 2 years to become an ayurvedic practitioner. So if you know any good schools that can really teach, please let me know :) thank you :DDDDD

I've been having a problem with fluid in my ears. Went to a western doctor and found out it was not an ear infection but it was probably fluid coming from my sinuses, from allergies. I am thinking of doing nasya but I wonder if doing it with oil will just aggrivate my kapha more. Anyone have an opinion?

Digestion

Digestion is synchronization of many small processes. Food first goes to mouth where it is mixed with a kapha called bodhak-kapha which helps it disintegrate and produces sweet taste. Then it goes to stomach where it is mixed with kledaka-kapha which helps moisten it further. Then food goes to grahani that is small bowel. There it is mixed with pachak pitta which, being hot in property, actually changes the properties of food in order to make it absorbable. Pachak pitta is a seat of jatharagni (digestive power). During this stage of digestion, samana vata is necessary for proper digestion. Because this vata helps normal movement of intestines and proper secretion of pachak pitta. Further the liquified and digested food (chyme) travels through the length of small intestine and the liquid that is absorbed (chyle) is called ahara rasa, which is further converted to rasa-dhatu (which is first dhatu). During our phone conversation I did refer to this 'rasa dhatu.' Improper rasadhatu or lack in rasadhatu may cause dark circles around eyes (of course there are other causes for this too). Now, after most of the ahara rasa is absorbed, the remaining part of food is 'mala' that is waste material, this gets accumulated in large bowel. This needs to be excreted. Evacuation of the large bowel is done with the help of apana vata. If this function of apana vata is disturbed, this leads to kind of back-pressure and improper functioning of samana vata leading to digestion problem. E.g., if pachak pitta is secreted, but not utilized, it will not only hamper digestion but the pitta will be misdirected leading to pitta symptoms. Same thing is true about kapha.

Furthermore digestion at subtler levels occurs with the help of 13 different 'agni's that convert food into body parts. One jatharagni that converts raw food into absorbable food, seven dhatvagnis that create dhatus plus five panchabhautic agnis that create mahabhutas. Digestion may be weak at any of these levels. I know this was fairly lengthy, but digestion is such a vast subject and there are so many subtleties.

Hello friends, I am going to India with the intent to learn more about Ayurveda but I do not know where to study. I have found extemes (5yr+ programs or touristy 2 week-2month programs). Can anyone suggest a good thorough course in Ayurveda in India. I am looking to study for a year or so and get a good understanding in the country where it is from. Any suggestions would be great, thank you.

About Saving Sandalwood

New Caledonia Sandalwood

Quote, "Sandalwood oil is an aromatic treasure with a long history of use in ethno-botanical medicine, cosmetics, perfumery, ceremony, and meditation. Because of its wonderful fragrance and healing properties it has become increasingly rare and is now distilled from trees that are over-harvested, illegally harvested, and facing ecological threat through deforestation and grazing. A large percentage of the sandalwood oil on the market is adulterated or produced under unethical conditions.
In response to these legal and ethical issues, some companies are now abandoning the sale of sandalwood oil. At the same time, numerous agro-forestry projects are starting, especially in India, which should be supported.
Floracopeia is pleased to offer a fine sandalwood oil from a sustainable, ecologically and ethically produced source in New Caledonia. The New Caledonia sandalwood project is an excellent example of the challenges and rewards of long-term caretaking of a valuable and endangered species."

Newborn Rice Eating Ritual

Does anyone know the religious and/or Ayurvedic perspective on the ritual you see in South India when an infant is first fed rice at the age of six months?

The baby's head is shaved and copious quantities of mascara are applied to the area around the eyes before the rice is fed.

Is 6 month's the amount of time recommended in Ayurveda or is this a more religious ritual? I am wondering if anyone knows the name of this ritual and can expound on how Ayurevda has influenced Hinduism in the area; and vice-cersa.
Ayurveda and Water

Hello my good friends,
I am happy to join a group of like-minded individuals who have chosen health for the self. I would like to propose something to those of us who may have wellness problems, and also to those of us who have always known good health. I have stumbled across a miracle in the health and wellness world that can quite possibly take our physical bodies to the next level of health. Kangen Water is an Alkaline, ionized, anti-oxidant electron rich, restructured, micro clustered, active hydrogen saturated, oxidation reduced, powerful living water. This water is a very elegant solution to many of our health issues. I am suggesting that this water can and will be used synergistically with Ayurveda and many other natural methods of obtaining perfect health to rid the body of toxins and disease to benefit us so that we may truly be who we are meant to be!
Please listen to some of these audio recordings to truly illustrate the power of this amazing water.

Folks--

--I have been doing reasearch on esoteric anatomy, and have found that different teachers/lineages assign different elements to the fingers of the hand. Isn't that interesting? How are the elements assigned in the traditions of folks in this Tribe?

--My teacher uses:
THUMB: Ether
INDEX: Air
MIDDLE: Fire
RING: Water
PINKIE: Earth

--In another tradition I respect, they use
THUMB: Earth (Na)
INDEX: Fire (Ma)
MIDDLE: Sky (Shi
RING: Water (Va)

Treatment for Sebaceous Cyst

I am wondering what Ayurvedic herbs are used in treatment of a sebaceous cyst.

The western herbs prescribed for both internal and external use are plantain leaf, Goldenseal, pokeroot (phytolacca) and comfrey. The herbs can be taken as tea or in capsules and can be made into a paste with bentonite clay to be applied externally.

What are the ayurvedic counterparts to these herbs and method of administration?
Also, what other treatments would you recommend?
help! lip rash!

okay, i have this very bad lip rash for the past couple of months. it effects the lips and then about a quarter inch red area around them. it goes through a 2-3 day cycle where it will heal up except for slight redness and then go back to being very stinging and dry and red. then it goes through a peeling stage and then back to normal for a little while. it's better at night and worse in the afternoon. it's NOT hsv, i have had tests and it's not a fever blister or bacteria. the doc says no but that she has nothing to help me except trying steroid cream and that's not a reality for me. i am thinking it's an allergy to something, but... what? i eat wheat, dairy and coffee, so those could be the culprits and am contemplating elimiating them one by one to see what happens tho the coffee thing makes me sad! i am mostly pitta and vata with kapha close behind. hmmm.... any advice?

Ayurvedic Nutrition Workshop in Venice this weekend~

Is anyone in the LA area?

This weekend in Venice- July 21 & 22, from 10am to 2pm each day, i'm having a nutrition/ food workshop called 'Yoga in the Kitchen'. It is based on my Ayurvedic background, so discussions include ancient holistic principles for your specific constitution & how they can be incorporated into our modern day lifestyles.

It's fun, easy to understand, and hands-on: we will prepare organic vegetarian food together incorporating Yoga philosophy & Ayurvedic techniques.

Each 4 hour day is $100, or it's $180 for both days.

-Saturday we will discuss basic ayurvedic principles and prepare medicinal ghee & kichari (a remarkably healing meal)

-Sunday we will chop up organic veggies, saute them with seasonal masalas (spice combos) and a seasonal chutney.

**And since there are still spaces available, I'm happy to give you an additional $25 discount if you bring a friend.**

Contact me for exact location information. It is very close to the beach, and there is plenty of sunshine afterwards to enjoy the day~
310.804.9914
--Cash or checks only--
A $50 deposit will hold your space.

Namaste,
Cristina

Two questions....

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know of a Vaidya in the northern Virginia area? Preferably one who is also an MD or whom my insurance would cover (I have Aetna)?

I have a Vata constitution. Lately I've been trying to clear up a bought of acne (something I had previously done with antibiotics and differin gel). Currently I'm using Lush products, which are more natural than you will find at the drug store or department stores, but not completely natural.

I was hoping to clear up my skin without the meds this time, since it's not a very severe case. Basically my skin is dry (normally it's combination), but I'm also breaking out in these little red pimples on my forehead, nose, and chin/jaw. I tried to look into ayurvedic remedies but I don't know which dosha to pacify. Can anyone make a recommedation? Simpler is better (as opposed to herbs/remedies that I'll have to search high and low for in specialty stores).

Sorry for the really long post - but I look forward to any responses! :-) Many thanks in advance!

Ayurveda and IBS?

Hello there!
I am a vata kapha and have really variable digestion. Sometimes I am going to the bathroom all the time (when I am anxious) and other times I can barely go for a few days. I also get really bloated and gassy after dinner time and also experience pain.
I have been told that stress reduction and exercise are the most important things for me. I also know balance is very important in my life, however I am so unattracted to a regular routine! Any other suggestions other than these? I think being both vata and kapha has made it so that my digestion issues are very extreme on both sides.
i am also wondering about the ayurvedic perspective on IBS.
Thanks :)

asthisraava and asthijvara

CM,
your knowledge is appreciated here on this tribe, and I want to thank you. I am doing some study and wondered if you had any insights:

In Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra, it mentions Mercury and Ketu in the second house causing asthisraava and Saturn, Rahu and Sun causing Asthijvara. A translator gives broken bones for asthisvara but I cannot find broken as a defination of sraava, instead just "causing to flow/shedding/exuding". Does asthisraava have the sense of broken bones or is it just bone problems in general?

-and jvara is fever, is there a modern equivalent of fever in the bones?

Thanks

Has anyone here ever used Rudraksha for blood pressure or circulatory problems, and does one just wear it to achieve the benefits, or how is it done?
Furthermore, if you have used it, did it work for you?

Hello,
My boyfriend's mother has been stricken with Filaria. What exactly is this? A parasitic worm? Her feet are swollen he says. I feel really bad. He woke up this morning and said that he did not sleep well last night. I thought it was because it was very warm. Finally he told me that he was awake with worry all night about his mother. She is in India, he says he kept telling his brothers to clean the garden...He is feeling bad. I wish I could do something. Can someone familiar with this parasite tell me what this is and does, and is there any ayurvedic cures/alleviations for this? He is very upset, but hiding it. I was looking forward to her coming to visit and taking care of her, finally meeting her. He says she cannot come now. I know he was excited to have his mother here and take care of her for a while...I am feeling so bad for him... any advice I can pass on? We would both be grateful.

hip dysplasia

CM,
I have a case of a child with late detected hip dysplasia (most likely caused as a breeched baby that needed cesarian). The mother noticed something at month 4 but doctors ignored till month 7, now baby is 8 months of age.

http://www.massgeneral.org/ortho/Hip_Dysplasia.htm

One doctor wants to operate, another wants to put the hip in a brace for a few months first to see if it can be more naturally rectified. I have recommended gentle massage with the appropriate oil, mantra, and use of the brace for a period of time. What oil do you think would be best for this kind of joint problem?

Coronary Artery Plaque (calcium deposits)

Does Ayurveda have anything that would gently reduce Coronary Artery Plaque (calcium deposits)?

Modern Medicine says, " The narrowing and blockage of the arteries by plaque, which consists of cholesterol, calcium, clotting proteins, and other substances, is called atherosclerosis. When this process occurs in the arteries leading to the heart, the result is coronary heart disease. If the blood supply to the heart muscle is severely reduced or stopped, and the heart doesn’t receive the oxygen it needs, a ‘heart attack’ occurs. The muscle cells suffer irreversible damage and die. The pain of a heart attack is actually the pain of dying heart muscle tissue. The process of atherosclerosis is now known to begin as early as in childhood. However, even late in adulthood, lifestyle changes can reduce the onset or severity of coronary artery disease."

Dosha Imbalance

Just wondering if there is a way to tell if you have a dosha imbalance without going to a practitioner - any tell tale signs? I am a pitta/vata/kapha , but over the last few months have been very kaphic on a physical level - I have an ongoing mucous / sinus issue that I thought was a sinus infection , but after an MRI the MD said no. It may be allergies, but it occured to me that it might be part of a kapha imbalance. It gets worse when I eat cheese - usually I don't have any problems with mucous at all - cheese or no.

thanks......

An instructive case I happened to treat yesterday. A 4-year-old girl was brought to me at 8.30 in the evening with the mother telling that she has not passed urine since last 24 hours. She has had diarrhea, fever, and vomiting since last 3 days and was treated elsewhere for that with antibiotic and antiemetic. Fever subsided, but she was still throwing up. Diarrhea stopped but she had not passed any stool since the day before. The parents called the pediatrician who felt the anuria was due to dehydration and that the child may need admission and IV fluids. The parents gave her lots and lots of water and other fluids, but no urine still. When I saw the patient, she was alert and playful without any sign of dehydration with little abdominal distention. I asked them to stop all medications, stop pushing water, and I gave her little gokshur and yavakshar every hour to help her urinate. Nothing happened. Suspecting this was due to obstruction of apana vata, at 2.30 a.m. I decided to use suppository before giving her any basti treatment. This did the trick. She passed some stool and along with that she passed lot of urine and slept soundly afterwards.

Pinched nerve in shoulder joint.

Some time ago, I was in dance class and went into a stretch for my arms that was beyond my capability and I hurt my shoulder. It seemed that I pinched a nerve and for some time my arm felt like it was asleep much of the time. It had gone away, and I had forgotten about it, but it has started again. I work hard and I am on the physical side alot, but I cannot pinpoint a time that would have injured me again. It starts from the center of my arm socket in the front and travels down the top/middle of my bicep, into the inside bend of my elbow and straight down my lower arm into my thumb and pointer finger. I don't know what to do. I was going to try heat and hot showers. I had put some ginger paste on my back for a bad back ache, and it did wonders. I was wondering if ginger paste would do anything in this case. My arm is constantly tingling as if it were asleep. I am sure I have some sort of nerve problems. Now, my fingers (only my pointer and thumb) have developed an itching sensation. I thought it might be stress bringing on some eczema or something, but I feel more that my nerve problems in my arm are causing this sensation. Any anti-itch suggestions similar to hydro-cortison?

Cooking for Pitta

Because I am one and somebody asked.

A few of my favorite ~easy~ things to cook are:

- a simple breakfast of basmati rice with cinnamon, coriander, ghee raisins and sunflower seeds, coffee with cinnamon, cardamom sweetener and milk...

- main meal of a baked potato or acorn squash, with fried asparagus or brocolli, and an apple...

- graze for some of the rest with nuts (cashew or blanched walnuts) and dried fruit (esp. mango).

And you?

Don't be shy vata and kapha.

gall stones

GALLBLADDER AND GALLBLADDER DISEASES (cholecystitis and cholelithiasis)

Gallbladder is an important abdominal organ. It stores the bile juice produced by liver and this bile juice is secreted in the intestine at the time of when food comes in the intestine.

Sometimes this gallbladder gets inflamed. This causes pain in the abdomen, nausea and vomiting. Ultrasonography may show stones in the gallbladder. Surgery to remove the gall bladder may be advised to cure this condition.

Nowadays, with advent of radiology techniques, some diseases are being easily diagnosable. In ancient times, it was very difficult for the physicians to diagnose diseases like internal stones, tumors, etc. Still, in ancient India, with the help of Ayurveda, physicians used their analytical skills to diagnose and treat conditions like these. One of these diseases is gallbladder disease, especially cholelithiasis and cholecystitis.

In ancient texts like Madhav-Nidana, pathogenesis of gallstones is clearly mentioned. Bovine gallstones (Gorochan) are said to have medicinal properties. It was a known fact that gallstones are nothing but concretion of bile and other substances.

According to ayurvedic theories, all diseases are result of imbalance in three main vital energies, vata, pitta, and kapha. These represent air, heat, and earth respectively. These doshas get vitiated, they get mixed with other body parts and are deposited in the body.

According to ayurveda, gallbladder is called as pittashay where digestive juices are stored. With wrong dietary habits, this area is vitiated with the doshas. Wall of the gallbladder get inflamed and if this happens chronically, this can lead to thickening of gallbladder wall. Concretion of bile, etc., occurs due to both vata and kapha doshas. Kapha provides necessary binding material and vata dries up this material to create a stone.

Ayurveda suggests medicinal treatment for this condition. There are some panchakarmas also very helpful in treatment of this disease. I have some evidence to say that gallbladder stones can be dissolved with ayurvedic treatment without surgery.

Gudhi Padva, neem, and ayurveda

The holy day of Gudhi padva is being celebrated on Monday, March 19, 2007 Gudhi padva is first day of the year, according to Hindu calendar. This day is celebrated to signify arrival of Lord Rama back to home after defeating his enemy Ravana. To celebrate this event, a gudhi (a kind of flag) is hoisted on every household in India. Also, it is a custom to eat fresh neem leaves with some jaggery early in the morning.

Winter is over and first signs of hot Indian summer are showing. Trees are blossoming with tender light-green leaves. Vasanta ritu has started. All the kapha which is accumulated during winter has started to liquefy. Vaman treatments are being performed to cleanse this kapha out. Neem helps to cleanse the blood of this and vitiated kapha. The beauty of neem is that it decreases kapha without increasing pitta. At the start of year with the use of neem we hope that the rest of year goes healthy and peaceful. Wish you all happy gudi padva.

I have seen my doctor, she has checked me well, i have done ultrasound, urine tests, blood tests, all came fine i have no kidney problem . the doc says its just infection and nothing to worry, she doesnt associates it with the thing which i tell her that i only experience this pain only when after wards when we have sex. can anyone help me, i am afraid to have intercourse next time as currently i have taking medicines mainly antibiotics for the infection. can anyone help me??
thank you.

Panchakarma

Okay, so, I have been doing more and more in the clinic internship these days, as well as outside of the clinic for others. This last week I guided and assisted someone through the Virechena panchakarma process, did their abhyanga and swedana for a few days and then created their purgative using triphala, eranda (castor oil) and draksha (raisins). They had a really good purging, which brought a lot out, physically and emotionally.

I haven't done a virechena on myself before, so, I decided now was the time, since I have some pitta excess and it is a good time to clear pitta. I'm on about my 7th day of building up the ghee in my system and this morning I have taken about 8-10 oz! I love ghee, but, wow, is that a lot of ghee to take all at once! Ugggh! Hehe.

I have been eating primarily kicharee this last week.

I will probably be having my abhyanga and swedana from my fellow interns in the next couple of days and then I will take my purgative.

I guess the more you use these things on yourself, the more you absorb the experience to help others. That's my feeling.

I'd love to hear of other's experiences of panchakarma in this tribe.

Best,

Hello,

I'm looking for an Ayurvedic practitioner in Berkeley or Oakland. I would like an assessment of my overall health, but in particular I am looking to shed some weight, so a doctor who is very experienced with that issue would be very helpful. Any suggestions?

Thanks!

vastu advice for a vata with a new room wanted

i'm a sensitive vata with a vata imbalance. i'm moving into a new room and looking to make it feel as stable and grounding as possible. the room has two doors. i have a feeling that the two doors will create a flow through of energy that might be distracting and vata provoking. does anyone have any vaastu insight that would address this concern? i was thinking that it may help to use only one door, keeping one door permanetly shut and/or blocked by funiture as though it were not a door at all. is it considered beneficial in vaastu to have two doors? for all the doshas? any suggestions???

Increasing Fertility

Hello,
Can anyone recommend a way to increase fertility? I am 39, so I am aware that my age is a major factor. My partner and I have been together for two years, with no condom use or any protection, and have not yet been able to concieve. I am aware that he might have something to do with it, he has testicles on the small side...and he wears briefs, so I understand that the heat that is created by wearing snug underwear might decrease sperm count. But for my part...is there anything I can do? I have in a way started looking at the "rhythym method" where they say you are only fertile about 14 days from your period...on that 14th or so day you give a couple of days before and a couple of days after to estimate your window of fertility. So we have increased intercourse during this time to increase chances of conception, but as of yet, nothing. Maybe I am too old? I will be 40 in July and I understand that with age comes decrease in ability to concieve. Does anyone have any advice? Any ayurvedic advice that can increase my chances would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Hi All,

I am new to this Tribe and just wanted to say, "Namaste!" to all. It's wonderful to find other souls resonated with the ancient science of life!

I am currently a clinical doctorate student in Ayurvedic Medicine at the American University of Complementary Medicine in Los Angeles. I am really enjoying diving deeper and deeper into the study.

I am a longtime Yogananda devotee and have studied Chinese medicine and Homeopathy as well, but, I'm LOVING how the Ayurvedic medicine connects with all of my spiritual studies over the years.

Warm regards,
cataracts in the eyes

Is there an Ayurvedic treatment for cataracts of the eye?

"A cataract is a clouding of the eye's natural lens, which lies behind the iris and the pupil. The lens works much like a camera lens, focusing light onto the retina at the back of the eye. The lens also adjusts the eye's focus, letting us see things clearly both up close and far away.

The lens is mostly made of water and protein. The protein is arranged in a precise way that keeps the lens clear and lets light pass through it. But as we age, some of the protein may clump together and start to cloud a small area of the lens. This is a cataract, and over time, it may grow larger and cloud more of the lens, making it harder to see."

Weak digestion....

Weak digestion could be either at the level of stomach or at the level of small intestines or at the level of cells. We need to differentiate these levels of digestion. At the level of stomach: one doesn't actually feel hungry, particularly during the breakfast time. This is mainly due to Kapha dosha. This could be constitutional or acquired. At the level of small intestine: even with little quantity of food the person feels full. The person feels full for a longer time. The time taken for digestion is prolonged. This is due to decreased pitta and vitiated vata. This is usually acquired. At the cellular level: inspite of having hunger and taking food, there is no supply of nourishment to the cells and hence the body becomes weak producing a negative feedback, leading to accumulation of waste at the cellular level thereby producing diseases respectively.

Hence before taking up solutions or treatments for weak digestion one should carefully assess at what level is the digestion weak.

balancing two doshas

How do you balance out two dosha's that have opposing dietary needs?

This can be achieved by means of studying the gunas (properties) of increased doshas. There are following points to be considered while doing this.

1. Common properties: Presence of two doshas at a time is called as 'sansarga.' Pacification of both doshas is done by using foods with properties that are commonly opposite for each of the two. Eg. If vata and kapha are both increased, you can use hot diet, because both kapha and vata are 'cold' in property.
2. Sequence: When two doshas are present, we should pacify the predominant dosha first and then take care of the other dosha.
3. Let one dosha to increase: We can allow one dosha to increase for some time and when the other one is pacified, take care of the increased dosha later.

Climate Curiosity/ Family balance

... I'm rather new to the study of ayurvedic sciences and I believe I'm of Kapha dosha. I'm heavy set, with thick/oily skin, slow digestion, slow energy, wide eyed, elephant-like kapha. =) At least that's what the practitioner said. I'm not taking any herbs though, not yet. I really don't know what I should be taking. . . Well, beyond that, my fiance is vata/pitta. He hasn't seen a practitioner, so my opinion could be wrong. He's 5'4 and very thin, bounces back and forth between being underweight and just at a healthy weight. Easily excitable, tempermental, very musculator (sp?) However wide eyed and can't stand the cold.

Here's my questions, if anyone should know :
How do you balance out two dosha's that have opposing dietary needs when you're preparing the household meals?

We're moving to Ga, which climate wise, in the summers hot and moist/humid. Is this a good atmosphere for kapha dosha?

At times, my dosha will bounce between kapha and vata, rarely affecting my digestion too bad, just my skin, hair and scalp drying pretty bad and inabilities to focus on anything! Very fickle interests and nervous spurts of energy that I have to force in one direction to get anything done. Most times, unsuccessfully. This is the only way vata seems to affect me negatively. Seems about around winter when I come full circle back to kapha for whatever reason and everything is a mess. Now, I'm not sure if this is just how kapha is, how I might deal with stressors or if my diet during the summers have anything to do with it, but this "focus" is a big problem in my life with my business. LOL.

I'm trying to quit smoking, as my mother just passed of stomach cancer and our family just discovered my cousin has breast cancer. It's been tremendously hard though. I assume Kapha imbalanced, keeps me "stuck in my ways", to say the least... have any suggestions?

Any suggestions?

Remedying Weak digestion...

As a 23 yr old, tall, very thin vata male with pitta as a distant second, I have had a weak digestion for quite some time, and am looking for advice as to how to increase my digestion and regularity. I have always had difficulty putting on weight of any kind, and my digestion has felt kindof "gurgly", with inconsistent, small/slim stool. I have followed a vata-pacifying diet fairly devoutly, and have taken pippali and ginger (among other things) to strengthen my agni, but am looking for more detailed advice... Associated with the weak/inconsistent digestion is a mental fatigue that I've had off and on. It can be a bit difficult focusing on something like reading for example. I follow an almost completely vegetarian diet, and I would highly prefer not to eat meat, but I HAVE noticed that when I eat meat, I seem to be able to digest it quite well, and my energy levels improve substantially (even though it is a more "raw" or "agitable" type of energy). This improvement in energy levels and digestibility seems to be true much more so with chicken than with fish. In any case, I would love to be able to veer dramatically towards healthy digestion and energy levels without the introduction of meat. Any advice?
Thanks & Blessings~

Diwali

Diwali is festival of lights. For Hindus, this festival is as important as Christmas is to Christians. Diwali is typically celebrated for five days all over India. For us ayurvedic physicians, the festival is even more important because it includes Dhan-trayodashi (Thirteenth day of month of Ashwin), on this day a grand pooja of Lord Dhanwantari is performed.

India is predominantly agricultural country. During October-November when the crop is fully ripe (if the monsoon is good - which it is this year!), farmers are very happy and Diwali is celebrated with joy and enthusiasm. People are in general mood of buying various things from electronic equipment to cloths. Exams are over in schools and children are enjoying the holidays. So, nowadays it is all happiness around. May it stay forever!

Do not forget to perform a Dhanwantari pooja tomorrow on Dhanatrayodashi (on 19 October 2006). May Lord Dhanwantari help us all.

Wish all folk here on this tribe, a very very happy Diwali!

Any of you Vata's out there feeling the Autumn air? It's amazing how the changes in seasons affects us. But it's good to know what helps combat the transition. However I'm wishing I could move where it's warm year round, I do so much better during the summer. How about you?

Please help with Tinnitus (Ringing in the ears)

Hello
I have just joined this tribe. I hope I can get some help from you guys regarding my problem. (I have also posted on another ayurveda tribe).
Here is my story:
Almost 2 months ago I practiced (what I have found later and too late to be-) some very advanced yogic techniques known as Pranayamas and Bandhas (Breathing techniques+ Energetic locks) without former experience with yoga. I started hearing ringing in the ears which disappeared later.
After about a week I went on for a Vipassana meditation course. After 2 days in the retreat I started to have anxiety attacks which lasted on and off for more than a month. But now I am getting better, and much calmer. The biggest issue now is the Tinnitus. The constant ringing just won't let go.
Do any of you guys know any remedy or some special diet to make the ringing stop? Is it just a symtom of some disorder, and while eliminating the disorder the symtom will subside as well?
Thank you so much
Tintan
